US diesel supplies hit record low as demand season looms

U.S. supplies of diesel have plummeted to an all-time low, signaling a potential surge in prices as the country's heating and agricultural seasons commence. According to the Energy Information Administration, distillate fuel oil stocks – which diesel prominently falls under – were recorded at 103.4 million barrels as of August 21, the lowest level observed during this period since the early 1980s.

Global diesel demand is expected to peak around October, coinciding with the onset of winter heating season and the Southern Hemisphere's harvest season. The elevated demand, coupled with critically low inventories, could exacerbate price surges and fuel inflation. The war in Iran has disrupted energy markets, though refined product exports through the Strait of Hormuz have been notably diminished.

However, Russia's suspension of diesel exports following Ukrainian drone attacks on its refineries may further deteriorate the situation, with Moscow considering extending the ban for an additional month. This reduction in trade partners' supplies exacerbates the problem. Currently, retail diesel prices in the U.S. are exceeding $5.60 per gallon, nearing the highest levels since the commencement of the U.S.-Iran conflict and just under 20 cents shy of the all-time record set in 2022.

Simultaneously, U.S. gasoline prices remain stubbornly above $4 per gallon. US refiner margins for diesel production have escalated to record highs, indicating a surge in global demand for U.S.-produced fuel. Although US exports of the fuel have reached extraordinarily high levels, they are insufficient to compensate for the losses incurred.
