Trump: 'Time to teach Canada you can't do this anymore'

In a recent interview, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that it was time to teach Canada that it could no longer engage in certain practices, following the collapse of trade talks between the two neighboring countries. According to Trump, the trade deal they had previously reached was "pretty good," but Canada did not have a necessity for everything the U.S. offered. While some aspects might become inconvenient, Trump believed they could still source these items from elsewhere.

Trump imposed new 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports on Saturday, after the trade negotiations between the two nations fell through. In response, Canada retaliated on Tuesday by imposing tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. annual imports, as well as announcing aid for businesses and workers, matching Washington's latest duties dollar for dollar. These retaliatory measures are set to take effect on September 8.

Furthermore, Trump announced that 50 percent tariffs on Canadian autos and parts would commence on January 1. Canada has expressed concerns that the U.S. has refused to extend tariff relief to medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
