Tim Curry, famed for Rocky Horror Picture Show, dead at 80

Tim Curry, the British actor renowned for his role as the flamboyant Dr. Frank N. Furter in the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, passed away at the age of 80, his manager announced on Wednesday. Although the cause of death was not immediately disclosed, it was noted that Curry had been experiencing poor health in recent times.

He breathed his last on Tuesday at his residence in Los Angeles. Curry had an extensive filmography, often portraying villainous characters, and had also made significant contributions to Broadway, earning three Tony Award nominations. His most iconic role was Dr. Frank N. Furter, a character he debuted in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, co-starring Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick.

The role, characterized by his daring costume and a sing-along line, "I'm just a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania," became Curry's signature performance. Despite initial reservations about being typecast, Curry embraced the challenge, acknowledging that it was only worth doing if one was willing to take risks. Apart from his film and stage career, Curry was also a talented voice actor, earning a Daytime Emmy Award in 1991 for his work on the animated Peter Pan & the Pirates.

Born in Grappenhall, Cheshire, on April 19, 1946, Curry was the only child of a Royal Navy chaplain and a school secretary. After his father's death when he was 12, Curry pursued his passion for drama at Birmingham University. His portrayal of Dr. Frank N. Furter in the original London stage production of The Rocky Horror Show marked the beginning of his journey to becoming a household name.
