Tim Curry dies at 80: Rocky Horror legend who redefined British stage flair

Timothy James Curry, the British actor who brought camp and mischief to the stage and screen, has passed away at the age of 80. Curry, known for his unforgettable portrayal of Dr Frank-N-Furter in the original 1973 London production of The Rocky Horror Show, died on Tuesday night at his Los Angeles home after battling health issues following a major stroke in 2012.

Born in Cheshire in 1946, Curry grew up in a family shaped by his father's death when he was 12 and spent his early years in Plymouth and boarding school. His passion for acting was ignited after watching Judi Dench in Cabaret. Curry's career took off after a chance meeting with Richard O’Brien, who cast him as Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, a role that would later become a cultural phenomenon.

Curry's distinctive Frank-N-Furter voice was inspired by an upper-class woman he overheard on a London bus, and he famously used a Victorian corset in the role, along with comfortable women's black heels. His bold choices in roles, from Rooster Hannigan in Annie to Captain Hook in Muppet Treasure Island, earned him Tony and Olivier nominations, showcasing his versatility and comedic timing.

Curry's commitment to his craft was evident in his demanding role in The Legend of Hell House, where he wore full-body prosthetics for extended periods, and his later work on the 1990 IT miniseries, where he portrayed Pennywise the Clown despite his fear of clowns. Despite the challenges posed by a 2012 stroke that left him partially paralyzed, Curry remained active in promoting The Rocky Horror Show, often cracking jokes about his condition at anniversary events.

His memoir, Vagabond, published in 2025, continues to reflect his mischievous spirit and love for the arts. Curry's legacy is one of bringing humor and daring to both stage and screen, leaving audiences to "do the Time Warp" in his memory.
