South Korea Says Russian Military Planes Entered Its Air Defense Zone

On Wednesday, South Korea reported that it had activated fighter jets upon detecting Russian military aircraft entering its air defense zone, marking the second such intrusion in recent weeks. This escalation in tensions follows South Korea's alignment with Western sanctions imposed in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as the deepening of Moscow's alliance with North Korea.

The South Korean Defense Ministry disclosed that multiple Russian aircraft had breached and subsequently exited its air defense identification zone over the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. The Ministry asserted that South Korean military personnel identified the Russian aircraft prior to their entry and mobilized fighter jets to prepare for potential contingencies, though specific details were not provided.

The Russian aircraft, according to the Ministry, did not penetrate South Korean airspace. An air defense identification zone is a designated buffer area where nations mandate foreign aircraft to broadcast their identification for security reasons, though it does not constitute sovereign territory, and military aircraft are typically required to notify the relevant nation before entering such a zone, although there is no binding legal requirement to do so.

In late June, over ten Chinese and Russian military aircraft had crossed into South Korea's air defense zone. The Chinese Defense Ministry commented at the time that Chinese and Russian forces had carried out a "strategic air patrol" encompassing the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the western Pacific Ocean. Russia's Defense Ministry described the patrol as part of routine military cooperation arrangements and "not aimed at third countries."

Nevertheless, South Korea continued to lodge protests with both Beijing and Moscow, urging measures to avert further such incidents.
