Son of Uganda’s president says he will stand for top job in 2031

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda's long-serving President Yoweri Museveni and the country's military chief, has announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2031. Known for his vocal online presence and controversial statements, Kainerugaba, 52, has previously sought the top office in the land during the last election in January, which his father won.

The military chief, who heads the Patriotic League of Uganda, claims he will secure 90% of the votes in 2031 with his father's backing. However, Kainerugaba has previously pulled out of elections before. President Museveni, who has governed Uganda since 1986, faces accusations of human rights abuses, a stance his government denies.

The main opposition leader, Bobi Wine, fled to the United States due to safety concerns, while another prominent opposition figure, Kizza Besigye, has been in prison since 2024, facing charges of treason. When questioned about Museveni's potential for another term, a government spokesman stated that the decision would be made by the president and the ruling party at the appropriate time.
