Son of Uganda’s president says he will stand for top job in 2031

Uganda's military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the 52-year-old son of President Yoweri Museveni, has announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2031. Known for his aggressive social media remarks, including threats against opposition leader Bobi Wine, Kainerugaba played a crucial role in his father's re-election in January by implementing a crackdown on opponents and suspending internet services.

He declared his candidacy on the X platform, stating, "I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God." Kainerugaba, who leads the Patriotic League of Uganda, had previously announced his intention to run but ultimately withdrew from the 2021 election. Museveni, in power since 1986, faces accusations of human rights violations from critics, though the government denies these claims.

Bobi Wine, the main opposition leader, recently fled to the United States, fearing for his safety, while Kizza Besigye has been imprisoned since 2024 and is currently on trial for treason. When asked about Museveni's potential for another term, government spokesman Alan Kasujja stated, "as has been the case over the years, President Museveni and the party he leads will make that decision when the time comes."
