#SHOWBIZ: Arena Wan ready to prove her worth in upcoming stage role

KUALA LUMPUR — Arena Wan, the 27-year-old rising star, has been making waves in Kuala Lumpur by carving out her own career path, far removed from the shadow of her renowned composer father, Iman Wan. From participating in the Dewi Remaja competition to launching her acting career, Arena has consistently chosen opportunities based on her own talent and determination.

While she appreciated the privacy of not revealing her family background, she firmly believed in earning her roles solely through her own abilities. This determination led Arena to step into the world of stage production with Teater Muzikal Mansur & Liu at Istana Budaya, where she portrays the role of Tun Seri Anem, a cousin to Sultan Mansur Shah.

Arena openly admitted that this role presented significant challenges, as she had no prior experience in musical theatre. Performing three songs live on stage required mastering classical court language and conveying the raw emotions of a historical figure—an endeavor which pushed her beyond her comfort zone.

Initially, Arena's father had reservations about her ability to handle the demands of live theatrical performances. However, with encouragement from mentors like Datin Marlia Musa, Arena's resolve grew stronger. It took nearly seven years for Arena to break free from the "schoolgirl" roles that had characterized much of her early career.

Such typecasting frustrated Arena, as she yearned to demonstrate her versatility and range as an actress. Producers and television networks had confined her to high school roles, assuming she was incapable of taking on more mature or complex characters. However, Arena's breakthrough performance helped change perceptions and earned her a nomination at the Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian.

This achievement caught the attention of Teater Muzikal Mansur & Liu, leading to her audition for an international science-fiction film, marking yet another bold step in her career.
