‘She made everybody feel special’: Tennesseans mourn Dolly Parton

Hundreds of Tennesseans flocked to the town of Sevierville to mourn the passing of country music legend Dolly Parton. The iconic singer-songwriter passed away on Tuesday, and fans from across the United States gathered to pay their respects. At a statue of Parton outside the Sevier County Courthouse, she was fondly remembered as their "patron saint."

Callie Konane Rickards, a 43-year-old costume designer and devoted fan, described Parton's impact on the region. "She has given so much growth to the county and the surrounding Appalachia – economically, yes, but she has also uplifted us spiritually," she said, reflecting on Parton's unifying spirit and devotion to mountainous, working-class East Tennessee.

Many mourners highlighted Parton's generosity, particularly her assistance during a wildfire that swept through the area a decade ago. Her Dollywood theme park remains a significant economic engine for the region, and her Imagination Library has provided books to millions of children.

Jonah La Grand, a 24-year-old local, spoke of Parton's kindness. "She gives so much growth to the county and the surrounding Appalachia – she has also uplifted us spiritually. She's known worldwide for being so kind," he said. Parton and her 11 siblings grew up in severe poverty, and her philanthropy has transformed Sevier County, making it a better place, according to locals like Brent Allen, a cousin of Parton's who grew up in the area.

Allen emphasized the profound impact of Parton's presence: "Sevier County is 100 percent the way it is today for no other reason than for Dolly Parton. I think she has ascended to sainthood now." He recalled how Parton's warmth and kindness helped bring people together, regardless of their socio-political beliefs. "She made everybody feel like they were special."

A private funeral was expected to be held for family and close friends, followed by a public service either in Nashville or Sevierville.
