SEREC seeks probe of alleged N6,000 container levy

The Sea Empowerment & Research Centre (SEREC) has called for a comprehensive investigation into alleged N6,000 charges per container imposed by shipping lines in Nigeria. The centre also urges authorities to probe a reported demand for a refund of N178m in unapproved charges related to bonded terminals, empty-container returns, holding-bay capacity, and truck immobilisation and detention.

SEREC wants to determine if the charge was actually imposed, who introduced or authorised it, the service it was meant to cover, and whether payment was mandatory or voluntary. The centre also wants to verify the accounting records supporting the N178m claim and identify who collected, received or benefited from the funds. They further urge authorities to verify whether the relevant regulatory body was aware of or approved the charge and determine appropriate remedial action if it was imposed without authorisation.
