‘Qualifying standards cannot be diluted’: Government on screening test for foreign medical graduates

Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez journeyed to South Korea for a two-day visit aimed at enhancing investment, cultural exchange, and cooperation in technology and education sectors. During his trip, Velasco met with his South Korean counterpart, Foreign Affairs Minister Cho Hyun, to review the Mexico-Korea Action Plan 2026-2030.

The two ministers also discussed establishing a Korean cultural center in Mexico and a potential scholarship program for Mexican students, according to a statement from the Foreign Relations Ministry. Velasco reaffirmed Mexico's commitment to collaborating with South Korea in various international forums, including MIKTA, APEC, the G20, and the United Nations.

The visit marked the first time a Korean president would visit Mexico in a decade, as the Mexico-Korea Action Plan is set to be signed by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung during a future trip. South Korea is Mexico's fifth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $29.7 billion in 2025.

Velasco also met with experts from the Center for Science Diplomacy at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) to discuss developing joint educational programs focused on engineering, technology, and semiconductors. In the business realm, Velasco held discussions with executives from major Korean companies, such as Samsung, Hyundai, and LG, regarding strategic projects in Mexico, particularly in the energy sector.

Velasco concluded his trip by visiting the Mexican Embassy in South Korea to review services provided to Mexican citizens.
