Prisons Dept to cooperate in probe into death in Marang prison

The Prisons Department will fully cooperate with police probing the death of an inmate allegedly assaulted by multiple fellow prisoners at Marang Prison, according to a statement released today. The incident, which occurred on August 24, involved the 38-year-old victim losing consciousness after being attacked by several inmates.

Prison authorities immediately transported the victim to Merchang Health Clinic for medical examination and treatment. A medical officer later confirmed the inmate's death. The body was subsequently sent to the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem examination. The Prisons Department confirms that an investigation into the incident is underway, with a focus on the cause of the event and the identification of those involved.

Police had initially reported that the victim was believed to have been targeted by three fellow inmates, aged between 21 and 35, within a prison room. The suspects, also from Terengganu, have been detained and are currently under investigation for assault under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
