Political newcomer Darline Graham wins South Carolina’s GOP Senate runoff

Sen. Darline Graham emerged victorious in South Carolina’s GOP Senate runoff primary, decisively defeating Rep. Ralph Norman. This triumph holds significant importance as it comes after a series of setbacks for Trump-endorsed candidates. President Donald Trump played a pivotal role in securing Graham's win, providing him with his early endorsement, reiterating his support even during her debate struggles, and rallying for her in Myrtle Beach—a level of backing he has not extended to most of his other preferred candidates this cycle.

Additionally, MAGA Inc., Trump’s major super PAC, contributed over $827,000 to Graham's campaign through phone calls and text messages, an investment that Republicans in competitive battlegrounds have eagerly awaited. With this victory, Graham stands poised to replace her late brother, Lindsey Graham, as the Republican nominee in the November election and is nearly assured of a full Senate term in the reliably conservative state of South Carolina.

The president’s active support clearly proved instrumental for Graham during the two-week runoff period, which saw Norman and his team attempting to portray her as inexperienced by targeting her during the debate. The appearance of the president alongside Graham at a rally in the final days of the race helped solidify her ties to Trump, ultimately leading to her victory.

Graham’s unexpected rise to prominence is a remarkable achievement for someone who was virtually unknown just a few weeks ago. Prior to her appointment to the Senate following her brother's death in July, she had no prior experience in elected office. Since 2019, she has served as the head of South Carolina’s Commission for the Blind and previously worked for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department.

In contrast, Norman, a long-standing member of the Freedom Caucus with nine years in Congress, faced setbacks despite occasional clashes with Trump over spending, and also encountered opposition from the solar industry, which contributed $1 million to aid in his defeat.
