Police probe bomb threat emails sent to about 40 courts

The Korean police are currently investigating a series of anonymous emails sent to approximately 40 courthouses nationwide, according to reports. These emails, sent to prominent courts such as the Seoul Eastern District Court, Incheon District Court, and Gwangju High Court, indicated that explosives had been planted within the facilities, with plans to detonate them at a predetermined time, the police stated.

The emails alleged the presence of homemade bombs in the courts, prompting the police to dispatch initial response teams and special forces to secure the locations. However, the police determined that the likelihood of actual explosives being present was low, despite conducting searches and other operations at the affected courts, including the Supreme Court.

The Korean National Police Agency suspects that these threatening emails may be part of a series of hoax threats originating from Japan, which have been repeatedly sent since 2023.
