Players will be suspended 1 game if they accumulate 3 penalties in certain categories

NFL players will face a one-game suspension if they commit three penalties in specific categories, the league and players' union announced on Wednesday. This initiative aims to enhance player safety by targeting the most dangerous violations. The five health and safety rules violations under scrutiny are the hip drop tackle, horse collar tackle, launching, hit on a defenseless player, and blindside block.

NFL Commissioner Troy Vincent emphasized that these infractions pose a significant risk to both the defender and the opponent. Players voted on the changes during a Board of Player Representatives meeting, with owners briefed on the new standards during a separate meeting in Atlanta. The violations will carry over to future seasons, but players will have a fresh start for the upcoming season.

Coaches are also mandated to attend meetings with NFL officials to review video evidence when a player approaches the suspension threshold. Teams accumulating numerous health and safety rule violations may face financial penalties. Former NFL players, including Ron Rivera, will assist in overseeing on-field discipline appeals.
