Kuala Lumpur: The Perlis administration is prepared to face legal action filed by a Hindu temple committee over the recent demolition of their temple in Kangar, according to the state's Chief Minister, Abu Bakar Hamzah.

The government asserts it has the right to take such action under the National Land Order 1965, according to Utusan Malaysia. He stated that the matter is routine and the state is ready to defend its position since the land in question belongs to the government. "We wait and see. This is our land, so we will defend our position," he said.

The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple in Kangar was demolished by the Perlis authorities on August 20. The state government had previously reported that the temple was built on government land without authorization, and the enforcement action was taken after notices and discussions with temple officials were conducted over several years.

FMT previously reported that the temple committee filed a civil lawsuit against the Perlis state government, the Kangar Lands and Minerals Office, and the Kangar Municipal Council on August 19, one day before the restoration work began. The committee's chairperson, P Sathesh Kumar, said his group has held several meetings with Abu Bakar regarding the issue.

He also claims that Abu Bakar guaranteed during a dialogue with local residents on July 14 that no action would be taken against the temple until December 31 while efforts to find a solution were ongoing.
