Pagcor rules out entry of new e-gaming operators

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) has decided against issuing new licenses to online gaming operators at present, maintaining the current count of 48 operators. PAGCOR chairman and CEO Alejandro Tengco believes that this consolidation phase is necessary before deciding on any future license issuance. During a House committee on appropriations hearing, Tengco stated that the aim is to allow weak operators to withdraw, thereby strengthening the industry.

Currently, the number of online gaming licensees has reduced to 48 from 74. Tengco also maintained the existing fee rates for gaming operators, which are 30 percent for e-game operators and 25 percent for integrated resorts, effective from January 1. He explained that changing these rates would not ensure consistency in revenue collection.

PAGCOR has also fined an online gaming company involved in a recent giveaway of high-end mobile phones promoted by influencer Ivana Alawi and issued a stern warning to prevent any future violations. Tengco emphasized that the gaming regulator collaborates with various bodies, including the Department of Information and Communications Technology, National Telecommunications Commission, and Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), to address issues concerning illegal online gambling promotion by content creators and influencers.

In response to concerns raised by Kamanggagawa party-list Rep. Elijah Fernando, Tengco stated that PAGCOR is working alongside the mentioned authorities to address the problem of gambling addiction among the general public.
