Nebula Sans

Nebula Sans is a modern, humanist sans-serif font designed for legibility across digital and print platforms. It was created as a drop-in alternative to Whitney SSm, the previous brand typeface for Nebula, the streaming service by independent creators. Designed on the foundation of Source Sans, Nebula Sans offers six weights and two styles, making it versatile for various graphical, digital, and physical applications.

The development of Nebula Sans was influenced by the shared primary characteristics of Source Sans and Whitney SSm. Both were designed to bridge the gap between American gothic and European humanist typefaces, emphasizing readability. Adjustments were made to adapt Source Sans metrics to better match those of Whitney SSm, as Source Sans was smaller and narrower by default. The punctuation marks in Whitney SSm were deemed too straight, so Nebula Sans incorporates beautiful curly glyphs from Source Sans.

Nebula Sans also features the same stylistic alternates as Source Sans, with the defaults aligned to those of Whitney SSm. The asterisk symbol, named for its resemblance to a star, received a unique spin in Nebula Sans. Additionally, Nebula Sans includes tabular lining figures, a feature lacking in the default version of Whitney SSm. This allows for precise adjustments such as incrementing the timestamp in the video player while maintaining consistent digits.
