Metro 2039 Developers on How Russia's Invasion of Ukraine Changed Their Plans

The development team behind Metro 2039, a first-person shooter sequel from Ukrainian developer 4A Games, has been significantly impacted by Russia's invasion of their country in 2022. Creative director Andriy MLS Shevchenko noted that the team's worldview has been altered, leading to new perspectives and philosophy being infused into the game.

Executive producer Jon Bloch explained that the invasion brought war to Ukraine's doorstep, prompting a shift in focus from preventing war to exploring the consequences of war. This change in narrative direction necessitated significant modifications to the game's plans. Co-creative director Pavel Ulmer emphasized how the franchise's very nature became too close to reality, marking a stark divide between pre- and post-invasion.

Regarding the game's design, Shevchenko stressed the importance of density in the game world, while Bloch highlighted the team's commitment to maintaining high performance despite the increased complexity. They aimed to increase the density of objects, sound, animation, characters, and detail, all while ensuring the game runs smoothly across all platforms.

Regarding player advice, Shevchenko encouraged exploration to find interesting elements, Ulmer advised against rushing, and Bloch emphasized that the game is meant to be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, allowing players to absorb the story, atmosphere, and details. He recommended using sprint sparingly only when necessary.
