Meta settles in social media addiction case

In a significant legal development, tech giant Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion as part of a settlement to end a landmark trial in the United States. The agreement was reached on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Oakland, California, after a six-week trial where Meta was accused of designing features that intentionally addict children to its platforms. This resolution marks one of the largest legal battles involving the social media giant.

The settlement, which involves four states - California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey - puts an end to numerous other suits filed by dozens of states against Meta. These states had been seeking extensive financial damages, potentially reaching billions of dollars, along with changes to Meta's operations, particularly on its Facebook and Instagram platforms.

The accord comes as Meta faces litigation across various jurisdictions concerning the impact of its services on young people's mental health. While the settlement concludes a trial in Oakland, other jurisdictions remain under scrutiny. Notably, Tennessee had its own trial against Meta, which concluded through this settlement. Tennessee's Attorney General, Jonathan Skrmetti, emphasized the settlement's role in imposing unprecedented safety measures for children and allocating substantial funds for the Children's Digital Protection Fund.

This agreement represents one of many legal cases where major social media platforms like Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube have been defending their practices against claims that their products have had detrimental effects on children's mental well-being.
