Mahkamah Rayuan in Malaysia has granted the bail request of businessman Chung Chee Yang, who is serving a five-year prison sentence for assaulting and intimidating two personal guards during Ramadan last year. The three-judge panel, led by Judge Azman Abdullah, allowed Chung's conditional release while awaiting an appeal against the fine under Section 506, 298, and 323 of the Penal Code.

Judge Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz and K Muniandy were the other members of the panel. The court maintains a RM50,000 bail with a surety for Chung, whose passport will be held by the court until his appeal concludes. Judge Azman also ordered Chung to report to the Bukit Tinggi Police Station every two weeks.

Chung's lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, informed the court that his client had been held in custody for 29 days after the High Court rejected his bail application. Shafee stated that Chung was not a flight risk, as he always attended court proceedings. The documentation for the appeal was not yet complete, and Shafee expressed uncertainty about how long Chung would remain in jail pending the hearing.

The defense has requested 20 legal challenges in the appeal, including a dispute over Chung's constitutional rights. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Asnawi Abu Hanipah contested the bail application, claiming that Chung did not demonstrate any special circumstances. The High Court had sentenced Chung to six years in prison last year after convicting him on three charges. The sentence was to be served consecutively, and he was also fined RM22,000.
