Mahama inaugurates 4-member Bawku Revitalisation Committee to disburse GHC1bn fund

President Mahama has announced a groundbreaking GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund, marking a significant step towards rebuilding the conflict-affected region and revitalizing its economy. The fund, inaugurated by the President on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, will be overseen by a dedicated committee with the aim of restoring Bawku to its former glory as a major commercial hub in Ghana.

The initiative comes as the security situation in Bawku and surrounding areas continues to improve, providing the necessary stability to restart development projects that had been hampered by the conflict.

President Mahama emphasized that the allocated funds will primarily be used for infrastructure and other interventions deemed necessary by the committee. The ultimate goal is to extend the benefits of the fund to as many districts within the Bawku area as possible. The restoration of Bawku’s economic relevance is a key objective, as the conflict has disrupted essential public services, including the deployment of National Service personnel and medical workers to the region.

Additionally, the Tamli Dam project, which had been hindered by insecurity, is expected to be revived with the renewed stability.

This revitalisation plan is part of Ghana's broader strategy to transition from peace to development, following the recommendations of the Otumfuo Mediation Committee. President Mahama expressed satisfaction with the progress made since the committee presented its report on December 16, 2025, and highlighted the importance of the government's decision to activate the revitalisation fund in light of the positive developments.

He assured the public of the committee's competence, noting that its members possess the required experience and integrity to manage the fund effectively, and officially declared the Bawku Revitalisation Committee duly inaugurated.
