Loblaw is bringing back country of origin labels amid ‘Buy Canadian’ push

Loblaw, one of Canada's largest grocery retailers, is reintroducing country-of-origin labelling as the "Buy Canadian" sentiment grows stronger amid trade tensions with the United States. The move comes after Loblaw faced social media backlash for removing the labelling in response to trade uncertainty. Loblaw spokesperson explained that the company is reintroducing the labelling to help customers easily identify Canadian-made and prepared products.

The company will also continue using the maple leaf symbol in its stores to identify Canadian-made products. Industry Minister Melanie Joly has urged Canadians to buy Canadian products, stating that doing so supports jobs and puts pressure on the U.S. Retail analyst Bruce Winder noted that the 'Buy Canadian' movement has gained strength again, indicating that the decision to remove the labelling was a mistake for Loblaw.

The company is also bringing back the 'T' symbol to identify products affected by tariffs that are sourced directly from the U.S.
