Lions Starting LB Battle Takes Another Surprising Turn

Devin White was once a frontrunner for the Detroit Lions' starting WILL linebacker position. However, the competition took an unexpected turn when Malcolm Rodriguez dominated Wednesday's practice. The Lions opted to give Rodriguez all of the third-linebacker snaps, while White was assigned to the second unit. This marks a significant shift from White's initial lead and suggests that the competition has become wide open once again.

The Lions entered camp with Rodriguez as the logical replacement for Alex Anzalone at WILL, and he was re-signed in March. Initially, the team's preview highlighted Rodriguez alongside Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes as one of the roster's primary competitions. However, Rodriguez suffered an ankle injury, giving White an opportunity to step up.

He quickly impressed Dan Campbell and continued to build momentum, eventually starting during the preseason victory over Washington. By Monday, it appeared that White had solidified his position as the new leader in Detroit's starting linebacker battle. Yet, just two days later, Rodriguez took every first-team rep available at the position.

There are several possible explanations for this sudden change. Detroit may be giving Rodriguez an extended look after White's extensive work earlier in camp, or the coaching staff may want comparable evidence on both players before making a decision. It's also possible that Rodriguez's health allowed the Lions to provide him with the workload they had originally planned.

Regardless of the reason, the Lions' decision to give Rodriguez first-team reps while White was on the second team is significant. White was moved to the second team, and Rodriguez handled the first-team third-linebacker role exclusively. Additionally, Rodriguez's strong performance during a special-teams drill drew a positive reaction from teammates and coaches.

As the preseason finale against Indianapolis approaches, the true nature of the competition remains uncertain. The "Starter" label may not tell the whole story, as the third linebacker position is not likely to be an every-down position. Both White and Rodriguez bring different strengths to the team – speed and aggression from White, and positional flexibility, familiarity, and special-teams value from Rodriguez.

The Lions may find roles for both players without treating the WILL linebacker position as dramatically more important. However, Wednesday's change in the competition certainly altered the narrative.
