Life360’s $8 Pet Tag vs Pet GPS: What Each One Does

Life360 has introduced a $7.99 QR pet tag as an affordable alternative to its Pet GPS tracker, but the two products serve different purposes. The QR tag only becomes useful when a pet is found and its QR code is scanned by a finder. In contrast, the Pet GPS tracker offers real-time tracking and escape alerts if a pet wanders away from home.

Life360 recently introduced the QR tag along with new pet-care features and Zoomies alerts. The company claims more than 8 million pets are registered on Life360. These products can complement each other, but an owner should consider whether they need assistance in locating their pet or finding it once it has been found. The QR tag does not provide GPS tracking or ongoing location updates.

When a finder scans the QR code, the owner receives an app notification, email, or message with the finder's chosen information. The finder can also leave a note or share their location through the Life360 app without installing it. The tag's primary advantage is its simplicity, as it requires no charging, no subscription, and no collar attachment.

However, the Pet GPS offers active tracking, live location updates, geofencing, and escape alerts. It relies on GPS, LTE, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi and can send an Escape Alert when a pet leaves a designated area. The tracker is rechargeable and can last up to 14 days on a single charge, with a Bluetooth Reserve Mode extending its reach for up to six months.

The Pet GPS also connects to Life360's Pet Finder Network, which notifies nearby Life360 members when a pet goes missing. The tag's QR fallback allows a finder to contact the owner without installing the Life360 app. In comparison, Apple's $29 AirTag uses the Find My network for tracking, but it lacks the live GPS tracking and geofence-based alerts of Life360's Pet GPS.

The $49.99 price tag for Life360's Pet GPS includes one year of Silver membership, but additional trackers may incur a cellular activation fee. Life360 emphasizes security protections for both devices, including encrypted location data. Ultimately, the choice between the QR tag and Pet GPS depends on the owner's specific needs. The QR tag is ideal for owners who want a simple, low-cost way to ensure their pet's identification, while the Pet GPS is better suited for pets that frequently roam or escape, as it offers real-time tracking, geofencing, and an extensive recovery network. Using both can provide a comprehensive safety solution for pet owners.
