League-winning youth darts team 'like another family'

The Black Country Youth County Darts team, established in 2023, has expanded significantly since its inception. The team, based in Coseley, Black Country, grew from 28 players last season to 33 for the upcoming season, with an increase in female players from four to seven. Team manager Andy Poole expressed pride in the team's growth, noting that the addition of seven female players is particularly significant as getting women to play darts can be challenging.

The group comprises various teams, including a female-only team, an under-18s team, and an under-21s team.

McKenzie Thomas, captain of the female-only team, shared how the team functions like a second family. She explained how the support from her teammates helps her grow and build confidence, even if she doesn't initially feel confident. Alfie Corbett, captain of the under-21s team, emphasized the team's improvement since his first season, stating that they have strengthened their skills and become a better unit.

Corbett himself started playing darts at a young age and has dedicated himself to the sport, playing daily and finding immense joy in it.

Lacey Hughes, squad captain, also highlighted the team's origins and how her father, professional darts player Jamie Hughes, inspired her to take up the sport. Having grown up around darts, Hughes sees the team as a way to preserve the Black Country culture. Kit manufacturers are locally sourced, which Hughes believes keeps the tradition alive within the community. The team's goal for the upcoming season is a clean sweep in all competitions, including retaining last year's league win.

Poole stressed the importance of teamwork, describing how the players have evolved from being individual players to a cohesive team that supports one another. He noted that the oche, or throw line, can be a lonely place, but when the team is behind them, they have everything they need to succeed.
