Latest officer suspension linked to third racism incident, Montreal police say

Montreal police have disclosed that a fourth officer has been suspended in connection with a third alleged incident of misconduct, adding to a troubling pattern of disciplinary action. The latest suspension follows the disbanding of a 16-member patrol unit in June due to allegations of racism, misconduct, and criminal behavior. Originally, three officers were suspended in June for referring cases to public prosecutors, while a fourth officer was later suspended in relation to a second incident.

Police spokespersons confirmed the suspensions, emphasizing the need to maintain public trust in law enforcement. Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada, along with police chief Fady Dagher and the head of the police brotherhood, Yves Francoeur, held a news conference on August 21 to announce new measures aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability. Police have not disclosed the timing of Dagher's awareness of the fourth officer's suspension.
