Las ‘kellys’ de los hoteles denuncian que el trabajo les cuesta la salud: “Comenzamos el día con café, seguimos con Nolotil y acabamos con relajantes musculares”

Camareras de piso en hoteles reveal that their work is taking a toll on their health, according to Maria del Mar Jiménez, the president of Las Kellys de Madrid. The group of hotel floor cleaners from the capital traveled to Barcelona this week for their annual protest, held every August 25th for the past 12 years. Jiménez expressed her concern for these women, warning that they may end up incapacitated, like herself, with severe back and joint issues, as well as muscle relaxants being necessary for daily functioning.

For the past decade, Las Kellys have been protesting their working conditions across Spain, but there has been little progress. They are particularly upset about the impact of their job on their health and the worsening conditions, as hotels have shifted from hiring them directly to using Temporary Work Companies and then Service Companies.

These companies are designed to circumvent the hotel industry's collective agreement and classify the cleaners as part of the cleaning sector. The salary disparity between the two groups is estimated to be between 600 and 800 euros.
