Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt: Schulze, Siegmund und die Frage: Wer ist eine „Flachzange“?

Less than two weeks prior to the upcoming Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt, the leading candidates of the various political parties engaged in a heated debate at the MDR-Wahlarena. The primary focus of the discussion revolved around migration, economic future, and some contentious statements from the AfD.

CDU candidate Sven Schulze and his leading AfD opponent Ulrich Siegmund initially faced off, with the atmosphere being at times rough. Following the initial round, the spotlight shifted to other prominent candidates from different parties. Siegmund referred to Schulze as a "scrap-metal jaw," while Schulze countered this with his emphasis on economic investments in the Wittenberg region.

Schulze stressed his track record in delivering on promises, whereas Siegmund criticized him for having an "elitist perspective." The CDU has held power in the state for 24 years, and Siegmund claimed it was time to acknowledge the free childcare system. Schulze maintained a firm stance, stating he would not judge Siegmund's character, but noted that he associates with individuals he considered to be "very dangerous and extreme."

As the debate continued, Schulze warned of false promises and insisted on pragmatic discussions. Siegmund's response was vague, stating his goal was to do what is right for the land and its people, while also advocating for fewer migrants.

Both candidates emphasized their commitment to maintaining state cohesion, regardless of the election outcome. The AfD has widened its lead over the CDU, with the latter's support dropping by two points to 22 percent in a recent Infratest dimap survey. The AfD now holds 42 percent, while the CDU trails at 22 percent. The remaining parties are expected to struggle to achieve the five-percent threshold.

In the aftermath of the vote, Siegmund reiterated his intention to lead an AfD-only government, while Schulze remained ambiguous about potential coalition options. They all agreed, however, that a divided Germany would be the consequence of the election outcome, with Schulze vowing to lead a non-divisive government.
