Jadavpur unrest probe committee to hold first meeting this week after 'injured' VC rejoins

The probe committee established by Jadavpur University to investigate the campus violence is scheduled to convene this week, following the return of injured Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya, officials revealed. Bhattacharya sustained a knee injury when he tripped and fell outside a stakeholders' meeting on Monday night, receiving a three-day rest period from medical professionals. He is anticipated to resume his duties by Thursday or Friday.

Leftist groups SFI, RSF, AIDSO, and FETSU are planning to meet with the authorities upon Bhattacharya's return. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students Union (FETSU) held a general assembly on August 19, resulting in confrontations between Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated ABVP members and Left-leaning student factions at the university on August 20.

The altercation resulted in multiple student injuries and allegations of outsiders being brought onto campus by both parties. On the same day, a skirmish between SFI and ABVP supporters with the police occurred in their efforts to enter the campus from a single road, leading to the removal of the university's emblem from gate number 4.

SFI leader Anjil Das expressed anticipation for the probe committee's meeting, stating that the students intend to present a deputation to the committee on that day. The protesters are demanding accountability for those responsible for the clashes, including university officials and security personnel. They also seek to ensure that individuals under investigation are barred from entering the campus during the probe to prevent any influence or disruption of the process.
