Jadavpur unrest probe committee to hold first meeting this week after 'injured' VC rejoins

A committee formed by Jadavpur University to investigate recent campus violence will hold its inaugural meeting this week, following the injured Vice-Chancellor's return to duty, according to officials. Chiranjib Bhattacharya, the VC, sustained a knee injury after tripping and falling while leaving a meeting on Monday night, and he is expected to resume work by Thursday or Friday, a university employee reported. Leftist groups SFI, RSF, AIDSO, and FETSU intend to meet with authorities upon Bhattacharya's return.

A clash erupted on August 20 between RSS-affiliated ABVP members and Left-leaning student groups, resulting in injuries and accusations from both parties of outsiders entering the campus. In another incident on the same day, SFI and ABVP supporters had a scuffle with police while attempting to enter the campus from the same road, causing the university's emblem to be removed from gate number 4.

Students have called for accountability towards those responsible for the clashes, including university officials and security personnel, and have demanded that any under investigation be barred from the campus during the probe to ensure an unbiased process. SFI leader Anjil Das expressed anticipation for the committee's meeting and announced a deputation would be submitted on that day. The university sought CCTV footage related to the clashes, which Kolkata Police officers collected on Tuesday.
