After almost an hour of Zara Qairina Mahathir's death autopsy being delayed, Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan revealed he was leaving the courtroom for the first time during a hearing spanning 21 years of service. (Facebook photo) PETALING JAYA: Zara Qairina Mahathir's autopsy hearing was delayed by nearly 50 minutes before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan exited the courtroom amid a tense atmosphere as proceedings commenced.

The scene erupted when attorney Ram Singh represented one of the teenagers accused of the bullying incident involving Zara Qairina, questioning psychiatrist Dr. Wong Haw Huo, the 75th witness in the autopsy. Ram repeatedly asked Wong to provide a direct answer to his questions, including the cause of the 13-year-old victim's fall and whether the teenager was alone at the time of the incident, among other inquiries, according to Bernama.

Rizwandean M Borhan, representing Zara Qairina's mother, later stated that Ram's questioning of Wong was harsh. Ram then replied, "Mr., please refrain from using harsh words towards me. Earlier, too, some questions were very harsh (from other attorneys), but this issue was very important for us, very important." Amir Shah then asked, "But is this not an autopsy, but a discussion?"

Ram replied, "I am not saying this is a discussion, sir. It means, justice must prevail. Justice must be done." Amir Shah then asked, "Isn't it fair that I am fair?" Ram responded, "Sir, you are fair," before the coroner again asked, "Isn't it fair?" before departing his seat. Ram then said, "Not quite, sir. Let's not get carried away with emotions regarding this matter.

He (Wong) provided an answer that was contradictory and continued to explain." After the hearing resumed roughly 50 minutes later, Ram apologized to the courtroom while explaining that his earlier statement did not aim to question the fairness of the autopsy proceeding. Ram expressed his surprise at the coroner's decision to leave the courtroom as an autopsy attorney and hoped such incidents wouldn't recur.

Rizwandean also submitted an apology. Amir Shah accepted Ram and Rizwandean's apologies but reminded all attorneys to always be cautious and professional throughout the autopsy proceedings. He also apologized to all parties while explaining that it was the first time he left his seat during a 21-year-long service. "I also apologize to all of you because I lost my patience and this was the first time I left my seat, with slight pain in my chest."

Wong informed the courtroom that the last student Zara Qairina met before the incident was considered an important individual to assess her mental state before the event. Wong said that getting to know the student personally helped the psychiatrist better understand Zara Qairina's mental state, besides her physical appearance, speech, behavior, and emotions at the time.

He said this information is crucial in determining Zara Qairina's mental state, including her ability to comprehend the possible consequences of her actions. Zara Qairina passed away at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 17, 2025, a day after being found unconscious in her school hostel's toilet around 4 a.m.
