Haze: Health Ministry prepares for possible spike in asthma, respiratory infections

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — The Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) is ramping up its readiness for a potential surge in health cases linked to the ongoing haze situation across the country, according to Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. The main areas of concern include a significant rise in cases of asthma and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) due to deteriorating air quality.

Reports indicate that 30 regions nationwide have recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, prompting the MOH to be prepared for the situation. Dr Dzulkefly emphasized the importance of preparing for these health issues, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those in high-risk categories.

He advised these individuals to wear face masks if they experience symptoms, limit outdoor activities, and stay hydrated. The MOH is collaborating with other ministries, such as the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), to tackle haze-related challenges. In a separate development, Dr Dzulkefly announced that he will hold a special media session next week to discuss the government's decision to abandon its appeal against a May High Court ruling that overturned the removal of liquid nicotine from the list of scheduled poisons.

He also presented a Cabinet Memorandum at today's Cabinet meeting, outlining the MOH's perspective and stance on the decision not to appeal the High Court judgment.
