Govt concentrating on follow-up action on Tabung Haji RCI report, says minister

Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated that the government is prioritizing the implementation of follow-up actions based on the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Tabung Haji, a savings fund for Malaysian Muslims. The RCI report, released in July after being kept classified for nearly four years, outlined 25 recommendations to improve the fund's governance, financial reporting, investment discipline, and oversight.

As of late July, more than 75% of the recommendations had been implemented, and the government pledged to accelerate the remaining reforms. The RCI was comprised of six respected experts in various fields, approved by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2021. The report found that excessive hibah commitments, questionable accounting practices, weak oversight, ambitious investment strategies, and rising subsidy obligations led to financial pressure on Tabung Haji between 2014 and 2020.
