Governors spend N512bn on travels, offices

Thirty-three state governments spent a staggering N512.10bn on Government Houses, Governors' Offices, and travel in the first six months of 2026. This figure is about 4,713 times greater than the combined six-month salary of all 36 governors, which amounts to just N108.65m. The analysis of state budget implementation reports revealed that N420.01bn was allocated to Government Houses and Governor's Offices, while N92.09bn went towards travel and transport.

Despite the governors' stated monthly salary of N503,000, their combined six-month salary represented only 0.02% of the total expenditure on executive offices and travel. Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, recently claimed his monthly salary was N503,000, but his salary alone accounted for a fraction of the total public expenditure and perks associated with the offices.

The analysis highlights the enormous public cost attached to maintaining the executive offices and the fiscal implications of the expenses.
