Giants star Toby Greene opens up on his AFL future

Greater Western Sydney (GWS) star Toby Greene is considering his future with the club, set to meet Geelong and Essendon in the coming days. Greene, who has played 282 games for GWS since their inaugural AFL season in 2012, is close to making a decision on his career path. The 32-year-old, hailed as the greatest player in the Giants' 15-year history, has revealed his desire to provide more support for his young family by concluding his AFL career in Victoria.

Admitting that it will be the toughest decision of his career, Greene told the Ausmerican Aces podcast that he felt he was a favorite among Melbourne fans and GWS teammates to leave the club. He emphasized that if he were definitely leaving, he would have informed GWS, stating that he is upfront with them about his future plans.

Greene's close friend and former teammate, Jeremy Cameron, is expected to attract interest from Geelong, while Essendon is desperate for senior players to help develop their young talent. Former Giants assistant Mark McVeigh has also been appointed as coach of the Bombers, indicating his interest in speaking with Greene.

Greene revealed that he would meet with Geelong probably this weekend and expressed minimal concern about the tour or the current state of the Geelong club. He mentioned that he would do weights at Anytime Fitness if necessary. The Bombers coach, Spike McVeigh, had reached out to Greene, hoping to catch up, which surprised Greene as it was not a topic he had been contemplating all year.

GWS missed the finals for the first time since 2022, with several experienced players already leaving the club. Greene stated that if he believed the Giants wouldn't finish in the top-four next year, he wouldn't stay. However, Greene emphasized that the sole goal he has with the Giants is to win a premiership, as winning one there would be superior to multiple championships at another club.
