Giants receiver Calvin Austin is out for the season with a torn ACL, AP source says

New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin sustained a torn ACL in his right knee and is set to miss the entire season, according to a source familiar with the injury. The 27-year-old athlete went down without any contact during a one-on-one drill at training camp on Tuesday and was subsequently taken off the field on a cart. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy expressed concern after practice, fearing the worst for Austin.

The talented wide receiver had been performing exceptionally well in the preseason, making two catches for 24 yards in a recent exhibition game against Miami. Austin was one of quarterback Jaxson Dart's most trusted targets during team practice sessions as well. His absence from the team will undoubtedly impact the Giants' offense, opening up opportunities for other players to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.

Competing for a position at the crowded receiver position include Malik Nabers, who has recovered from his own ACL injury and is expected to play against Dallas on September 13, Darnell Mooney, Braxton Berrios, and Odell Beckham Jr., who were all signed as free agents. Additionally, rookie Malachi Fields has demonstrated promising skills that could contribute at the NFL level.

Austin signed a $1.5 million contract for the current season and had previously excelled with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2022 to 2024, recording 89 catches for 1,140 yards and nine touchdowns in 51 games, including the playoffs.
