Gaza parents urged to stop children flying kites after Israel warning to Hamas

CAIRO, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Gaza parents have been urged to cease their children from flying kites in the war-torn region after Israel warned Hamas of a harsh response if the militant group resumes the practice of launching incendiary kites over the border. The popular committees, representing local NGOs and charities, issued the warning in a statement on Monday.

The announcement was in coordination with Hamas authorities, according to a source within the group. The statement emphasized the need to protect children's lives while respecting their right to play. In 2018, incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza caused wildfires across vast areas, as a form of protest against the Israeli blockade.

In recent weeks, several kites without incendiary materials were spotted drifting from Gaza into Israel, causing concern among Israeli residents in nearby villages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stern warning to Hamas, stating that those responsible for launching kites, balloons, or drones towards Israel would face assassination and that areas from which they originate will be ordered to evacuate.

Hamas responded by accusing Israel of using pretexts to prolong the war. The Board of Peace, overseeing the implementation of the 2025 Gaza ceasefire deal, also condemned the kites, insisting that all militant activity in Gaza must cease.
