GARID to build 10m-wide underground drain in Kaneshie from September 7

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project is set to build a 10-metre-wide underground stormwater drain in the Kaneshie enclave to enhance flood control in Ghana's capital. This follows the devastating floods that hit Accra, three other regions, and left at least thirty-nine people dead on June 29. Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, the GARID Project Coordinator, announced the commencement of the construction on September 7, 2026.

The new facility will replace two existing pipes, each 1.2 metres in diameter, running for 1.5 kilometres from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction along the Dr Busia Highway. The new drain will connect to the Accra Academy campus at one end and the existing drain at Pamprom Junction at the other. The project will be executed in three phases due to its large scale and location, causing temporary road closures and diversions along sections of the Dr Busia Highway. motorists and other road users are urged to avoid affected corridors and use designated alternative routes during the construction period.
