GARID announces Kaneshie traffic diversions as major drainage works begin on September 7

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID) has announced that traffic restrictions and diversions will commence in the Kaneshie area on September 7, 2026, to support the construction of a major stormwater drainage system. Dr Ohene Sarfo, Project Coordinator for GARID, informed attendees at a Government Accountability Series event that the temporary traffic measures were necessary to minimize disruption to motorists, residents, and businesses during the upcoming drainage improvement phase.

He urged all stakeholders to take note of the planned restrictions and adjust their movements accordingly. The new drainage project will involve the construction of a double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain along the Dr Busia Highway, stretching from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction within the Kaneshie enclave.

Measuring approximately 10 metres wide and 1.5 kilometres long, the project aims to replace the current inadequate two 1.2-metre-diameter pipes. The new system will connect to the recently completed section at the Accra Academy campus and to the existing drain at Pamprom Junction. Dr Sarfo emphasized that the traffic management arrangements were being communicated in advance to allow road users sufficient time to prepare for the changes.

Authorities are collaborating with relevant agencies, consultants, and contractors to ensure effective traffic management throughout the construction period.
