Gachagua accuses Ruto’s govt of siege on small-scale gas dealers

Emurua Dikirr has emerged as a contentious political territory in Kenya, transcending its status as a mere parliamentary constituency. This significance is underlined by the presence of President William Ruto on August 26, 2026, mere days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua visited the area. On the surface, Ruto's visit is focused on development projects such as the Mamboleo and Dikirr modern markets, the Mogondo-Esoit road, and plans for the Johana Ngeno University, with the latter named after the late MP.

However, beneath the development agenda lies a deeper political inquiry: who truly commands Emurua Dikirr and, by extension, how secure is the Kenya Kwanza vote in the South Rift? This question has gained urgency following the death of Johana Ng'eno, the MP who represented the constituency. Ng'eno's passing, which occurred on February 28, 2026, in a helicopter crash in Nandi County, not only triggered a by-election but also revealed that Emurua Dikirr voters could separate their parliamentary choices from their presidential loyalty.

Emurua Dikirr, a relatively new constituency carved out of Kilgoris in 2007, has demonstrated that voters can make independent decisions from national political trends. Ng'eno, who won the seat in 2013 and 2017 on a Kenya National Congress ticket before switching to a UDA ticket in 2022, had established a pattern where party popularity did not guarantee parliamentary control.

Keter, who challenged Ng'eno in all three of his victories, finally won the seat in the 2026 by-election. Despite this, Emurua Dikirr has maintained a close alignment with the national ruling establishment at the presidential level. For instance, in 2017, Uhuru Kenyatta secured 57.3% of the presidential votes, and in 2022, Ruto received 98.4% of the valid presidential votes.

The May 14, 2026 by-election served as a test to ascertain whether Ruto's political machine could retain its dominance after Ng'eno's demise. While the UDA's David Kipsang Keter won the parliamentary seat with 18,266 votes, DCP candidate Vincent Kibet Rotich received 10,760 votes. Notably, DCP captured about 36% of the votes cast in an area where Ruto had secured almost 99% of the presidential votes four years prior.

This outcome indicates that a significant portion of voters can diverge from the ruling party's candidate even within one of the party's strongest presidential regions. President Ruto's recent visit, coupled with development projects like the university announcement, underscores his commitment to the area. His gesture is intended to demonstrate that the government is present in Emurua Dikirr, while also reinforcing his political relevance in the South Rift.

The political battle in Emurua Dikirr is thus multifaceted, encompassing party loyalty, local representation, development, and broader political symbolism.
