Former presidents honor Dolly Parton following singer’s passing

Dolly Parton, famed as the Queen of Country music, left a lasting legacy through her commitment to child literacy. Parton, who passed away at 80, was the fourth of 12 children to Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton, growing up in extreme poverty in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Despite her father's love and intelligence, he never learned to read or write after leaving school early to support their family.

Moved by her father's plight, Parton dedicated her life to inspiring children to love reading. This mission culminated in the establishment of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in 1995, aimed at helping underprivileged children in her hometown. Parton's vision was that books could serve as seeds for dreams, which could eventually grow worldwide.

Today, the Imagination Library operates in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, and Australia, gifting age-appropriate books monthly to registered children at no cost, from birth until age five. The program has distributed over 332 million books globally, with more than 2 million going to Australian children. An international study found that the Imagination Library significantly reduces early literacy gaps in primary school and increases the frequency of shared book reading.

In Australia, caregivers reported that their children developed a strong love of books and reading. Upon news of Parton's passing, the Imagination Library team expressed their deep sorrow but affirmed their commitment to carrying forward her work.
