Former Florida State quarterback commits to Texas Tech

Thomas Castellanos, the former Florida State quarterback, has committed to play for Texas Tech this upcoming season. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Castellanos has entered his name into the transfer portal following a Kentucky judge’s temporary restraining order, which granted him an additional year of eligibility. The 2025 season marked Castellanos’ time at Florida State, where he served as the starting quarterback and achieved notable stats including 2,760 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.

Prior to Florida State, Castellanos played at Boston College and UCF, accumulating a total of 6,449 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions in his four-year college career. Texas Tech’s current starting quarterback, Will Hammond, is set to lead the team against Abilene Christian on September 5th, but Castellanos’ addition offers a valuable backup option.

Hammond, Texas Tech’s backup quarterback for the past two seasons, has contributed 1,151 passing yards, 9 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Under Texas Tech’s leadership, the team claimed the Big 12 title last season, finishing the campaign with a 12-2 record, and aims to repeat and achieve even greater success in the CFP. The first kickoff for the Texas Tech-Abilene Christian game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on FS1.
