Florida State freshmen are primed to make an impact in 2026 with 5-for-5 in place

Tallahassee, FL - April 9, 2026 - Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell supports the NCAA's five-for-five rule, which will be implemented for the 2026-27 athletic season. This new policy eliminates redshirts, giving athletes up to five years of eligibility, including years affected by injuries. Norvell believes that this rule will provide clarity for his roster, as players can now play whenever they are ready without worrying about redshirt management. He hopes that multiple freshmen can make an impact in the 2026 season due to this newfound freedom.

Wide receiver Jasen Lopez, a four-star recruit, seems primed to see the field early for the Seminoles. Despite joining the team late, the coaching staff believes he looks like a veteran and is challenging for significant opportunities. Another freshman, Devin Carter, could see substantial playing time if wide receiver Devin Carter misses time due to injury.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Izayia Williams, a four-star recruit, is also excited to see more playing time. He returned to the field after an injury during fall camp and appeared to be picking up where he left off. Quarterback Malachi Marshall, a JUCO offensive player of the year in 2025, could also take advantage of this opportunity.

With the new rule changes, Norvell is willing to consider inserting Marshall into the game if necessary, as his growth and development have been impressive since joining the Seminoles.
