DOSH launches forensic probe into Sunway Lagoon roller coaster incident

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has initiated a forensic probe into the Sunway Lagoon roller coaster incident, according to Hazlina Yon, the department's director-general. DOSH intends to enforce penalties if any legal violations are discovered. The exact cause of the incident, which left 10 out of 22 riders with minor injuries, can only be determined once the investigation is complete and all evidence has been collected and analyzed.

Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah confirmed the incident occurred at Sunway Lagoon, suggesting metal fatigue as a possible cause. Sunway Lagoon's ride was closed for inspection and maintenance approximately two to three weeks prior to the incident. Subang Jaya police have ruled out foul play and are continuing their investigation.

Hazlina emphasized that under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, employers are responsible for the safety, health, and welfare of their workers and the public affected by their operations. She stated that the amendments to the Act in 2022 also require employers to conduct occupational safety and health risk assessments and implement the recommended control measures.

DOSH consistently performs its enforcement duties through planned and surprise inspections, and plans to investigate the need for targeted inspections of high-risk rides at theme parks across the country.
