Deputy AG punches holes in Hannan’s counsels’ letters, medical reports

Dr. Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney General, has criticized the letters and medical reports provided by defence lawyers in the case involving former NAFCO CEO Hannan Abdul-Wahab Aliddiba and his wife Faiza Seidu Wuni. The couple are on trial for alleged financial misconduct in the National School Feeding Programme. Both defendants informed the court that their lawyers were unable to attend hearings due to poor health.

Aliddiba's lawyer, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, stated that counsel was unable to appear because he was unwell. Similarly, Wuni requested the same before the court. Dr. Srem-Sai examined the letters and noted that the first accused's lawyer's letter lacked evidence to support his claim of illness. The medical report presented by the second accused's lawyer was signed by an individual who did not indicate they were a licensed medical officer.

Under law firm rules and ethics, lawyers are expected to work in firms with other attorneys rather than as sole practitioners. Dr. Srem-Sai argued that the defence's conduct suggested an attempt to manipulate the trial's pace. Some of the health conditions mentioned in the letters seemed prolonged, posing challenges for the trial.

The court requested that an order be issued to prevent the case from being delayed due to these health issues. The judge agreed to place the medical report on the court's docket to ensure a fair determination when considering adjournments. The trial was adjourned until August 26, 2026. Aliddiba and Wuni have pleaded not guilty to 20 charges, including theft, money laundering, using public office for personal gain, and causing financial harm to the state. They are currently on bail.
