Coordinated attacks reignite Thailand’s southern insurgency

Recent coordinated attacks in Thailand's southern provinces have reignited concerns over the long-running insurgency by Muslim separatists. Over the weekend, dozens of night-time attacks injured three people and damaged government properties in the provinces near Malaysia. A convenience store explosion on Monday added to the violence.

The conflict stems from the region's historical roots as part of the Malay-Muslim Patani sultanate before being annexed by Thailand in the early 1900s. Cultural identity, political representation, and economic development concerns have fuelled militant groups like Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) to fight for an independent Islamic state since the 1960s.

Tensions escalated in 2004 after militants attacked an army base, killing soldiers and stealing weapons. The massacre of 78 protesters in Tak Bai in October of the same year, widely seen as a trigger for the unrest, resulted in a crackdown that drew international condemnation. Since 2004, around 7,000 people have died in the conflict, according to the Deep South Watch monitor.

While the recent attacks are unusual in scale, analysts say they are part of a pattern of weekly or even daily incidents over the past two decades. The attacks aim to demonstrate militants' capabilities and presence, testing security forces' readiness and seeking symbolic gains in political negotiations. Thailand and Malaysia have reinforced security measures, but the Thai government acknowledges the root of the problem is political, not solely security.

Peace talks between the Thai government and BRN have stalled, with both sides offering limited concessions on autonomy and power-sharing.
