Two men from Tawau were sentenced to three days in prison and fined RM2,000 for allegedly participating in a speeding incident on Jalan Apas last month. Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin, the magistrate, handed down the sentence to Sunardi Mardeka, 21, and Ruslimin Alie, 53, for violating Section 81(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The two defendants, who had no legal representation, were given the option of a suspended sentence, but they opted for immediate imprisonment. The court ordered them to serve their sentences starting from today, with an additional two months if they fail to pay the fine.

According to the facts of the case, Sunardi was driving a Perodua Bezza from Batu 2 to Batu 15 along Jalan Apas around 6:22 am on June 22nd. At Batu 5, Ruslimin's Honda Civic was seen accelerating and pressing the gas pedal forcefully multiple times, catching Sunardi's attention. Before they could confront each other, both men raced ahead, zig-zagging and dangerously cutting other vehicles while overtaking, continuing until Batu 13 along Jalan Apas.

Their actions were captured in a 20-second video posted on Facebook that same day, showing the two vehicles consistently speeding and racing on the highway, endangering other road users. Police identified Sunardi as the driver of the Perodua Bezza, after reviewing the registration plate, before arresting him on July 27th for failure to provide evidence during the investigation and for the speeding charge.

Ruslimin, who was driving the Honda Civic, was detained in Jalan Baru, Fajar on the same day after being identified as involved in the incident.
