Bill Gates warns world dangerously unprepared for AI upheaval

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has warned that the world is unprepared for the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence (AI). In a lengthy blog post, Gates said the AI era will be one of the most tumultuous periods in human history and that no credible plan exists for managing the transition. The Microsoft co-founder, now 70, chairs a philanthropic foundation bearing his name.

Gates highlighted three primary risks associated with the rapid deployment of AI. The first is the potential for permanent job loss, as AI can substitute for human thinking in various fields such as law, medicine, customer service, software, and manufacturing. This could leave young people entering the labor market with far fewer job openings.

Blue-collar work is also at risk as cheaper robots become available, with the construction and hospitality sectors feeling pressure by the end of the decade. The second risk Gates identified is the ability of AI to provide new capabilities to bad actors, making it easier for them to break into cybersecurity systems. Hospitals, banks, water systems, and power grids are all vulnerable.

Finally, Gates expressed concern about the impact of AI on children and human relationships, citing research that suggests AI chatbots can become addictive and deny people the opportunity to develop social skills. Gates acknowledged that his foundation has financial ties to the technology industry, but he emphasized that these profits will be used to benefit society.
