Bill Gates Calls For 'Human Reserved' Jobs As AI Threatens To Replace Workers

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has advocated for the creation of "human reserved" jobs as artificial intelligence and robots increasingly threaten to replace human workers. In a lengthy essay, titled "The Turbulent AI Era Is Here. The Choices We Make Are Critical," Gates warned that governments are not prepared to handle the scale of AI's impact.

He compared the idea of safeguarding certain jobs from automation to nature reserves, where development is deliberately restricted to prevent unacceptable loss. Gates believes that many jobs will disappear forever due to the advancements in AI and robotics. He calls for the establishment of "human reserved" areas where only people can perform specific tasks, likening this concept to nature reserves where construction is limited to minimize loss.

Gates highlighted the potential threats AI could pose, such as creating unprecedented cyber and biological dangers, disrupting the labor market, widening inequality, and becoming uncontrollable. He also emphasized that AI could help students, but may also hinder learning if overrelied upon, as it could diminish critical thinking skills, particularly among young people.

Gates stressed the importance of governments creating robust domestic and international frameworks for AI regulation, as the technology's potential effects extend to almost every aspect of public life. He also called for cooperation between the US and China to address the global risks posed by AI.
