Belarus builds railway near Ukraine capable of military transport, monitoring group says

Belarus is constructing a railway in the southern Gomel region that will be capable of accommodating military trains, according to the Belarusian Railway Workers Community, which reported on August 24. This development comes as military infrastructure is being expanded along the Belarus-Ukraine border, raising concerns in Kyiv that Moscow may be planning to integrate its key ally more deeply into the ongoing war.

Documents obtained by an independent Belarusian monitoring group reveal that a separate railway siding is being built for a facility designated as a training ground near the Yakimovka station, located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Ukrainian border. The planned track will be able to support up to 60 railcars, similar to a military train, and feature a high loading platform with ramps to unload wheeled and tracked vehicles directly onto the facility.

The project's primary contractor is the Belarus Institute Voenproekt, while earlier engineering documents referred to the Belarusian Armed Forces' capital construction administration. Once finished, the railway would enable military trains to move directly from Belarus' railway network to the training ground, allowing for the unloading of personnel, weapons, vehicles, fuel, ammunition, and other supplies without lengthy stops at public stations.

While the construction of the railway and training ground does not automatically imply preparations for an offensive against Ukraine, it would facilitate rapid reinforcement of a military grouping in the area if circumstances changed, according to the Belarusian Railway Workers Community. The organization cautioned that such infrastructure does not necessarily indicate an imminent attack but would enhance the country's ability to react quickly to any evolving situation.
